Most don’t necessarily understand what a discourse community is nor have they heard the term. Yet they had to of been apart of some type of discourse community at least once in their life, whether they know it or not. It helps to achieve a goal or to reach a destination of your goal with other people who have the same ideas or perspective based on a certain topic. It’s a need for this because without how will you get where you need to be? according to Peter barry and Logan flood, “in order to be successful, a community, or in this case, a discourse community, must share a common goal or goals. Without every member working towards a familiar destination, said destination can never be reached”. Which in most cases are true, although, a person can achieve without other achievers, it’s always better to have other people by your side with the mindset or similar mindset as you to achieve more. There are plenty of discourse communities out there that someone can be apart of. It’s also about intercommunication, this is a way to communicate with those amongst the group. With this apart of discourses it helps the community grow and building more of a participation and threshold level. Though, before you make it to that process you first need to come up with a genre, this helps build a connection and have a general idea of a communication between members. With Ideas you’ll better have an understanding on the discourse community and what it will be about. Then there’s lexis, a way of how people distinguish themselves between the outside world. What your community has should be like a joke that only you guys can understand, which Peter and Logan also explained in their article. Your discourse community should be full of people who understand whatever genre or idea that you may have and that they can agree with.
