The use of unconventional methods in academic writing

Academic writing has a certain standard. It is expected to be very formal and serious. Humor and pop culture references are typically frowned upon unless the writing is specifically about that. But using pop culture references, humor or other unconventional methods can be very beneficial. With academic writing being very formal it can limit access and understanding from people who have not read or written work of that standard.  By including pop culture references it would allow people to have a more relatable experience and a better understanding of the topic at hand. It would also allow people to be able to recognize the connection of many different topics and how to explore and explain that. Using humor would allow people to do the same thing as pop culture references. But another benefit is that adding humor into academic writing would allow more of the writer’s personality to show through and make the writing appear less sterile. Overall, adding more unconventional things such as humor, pop culture references and more can be very beneficial. It can be beneficial in terms of access to understanding for many people. It is also beneficial in the sense that students, specifically, to be more interested in what they are being taught.
