Rhetoric helps us develop a deeper understanding of what we are consuming when we read. As we gain greater insight by using rhetoric we are able to realize what was the purpose of the writing and why the author had decided to write the piece in the first place. It also helps us to read as it causes us to think more critically making sure we’re getting everything we can from what we read, instead of understanding a text from a general surface level. By analyzing deeper into the text, we also question and challenge the author’s ideas, considering the credibility of their work which is also important to be aware of when reading. Rhetoric may also be helpful as we read we may question who is the intended audience and how the author tries to appeal to these particular receivers of the information. It enriches the reader’s experience as we look into the strategies that were used by the author in order to get their message across. It can help us as we may come across biased texts as we try to understand reasons as to why the author feels that way, and by also exploring such types of sources also opens our minds to more ideas and the various perspectives that can exist about a topic.
