Personally, I have always loved the revision process. Once I was able to find a way to get my thoughts on a page and format a decent first draft, my favorite part about writing was the revision process. I loved going through and critiquing myself, finding my mistakes, moving around parts of my paper, and creating a new piece of writing. Although it can be annoying at times because in reality most of us would rather write it and be done, it genuinely has so many benefits. While revising your work and others pieces of writing you are expanding your knowledge of the writing process. Many of the mistakes I find myself making in one paper don’t appear in the next because I caught it, fixed it, and was able to apply it to a different piece. While revising others’ writings I find new strategies that I like that I can apply to my own writing. The same thing goes with mistakes, sometimes I find mistakes in others’ writings and wonder if maybe I make the same mistake. Revision isn’t just grammar and punctuation, it is formatting, organization, structure, and making sure your paper gets your point across in the way you want it to. It is making sure that your words leave the impact you intend them to have on your readers. Ultimately, each revision we make on not only our paper but other’s paper’s allow us to grow as writers and shape the way we share our voice, views, and research.
