There are many good points brought up in the article “Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers” by Nancy Sommers. In this article Sommers explains that revision in the writing process is extremely underused because the focus is on linear models. These models separate different parts of the writing process into discrete stages. According to Edward Corbett his linear model of writing is based on the irreversibility of speech. Although the thing with speech is that it’s impossible to be revised. So, it becomes an afterthought much like revision with writing or else it becomes insignificant. Yet by having revision after speech the linear models will reduce revision in writing-like speech. This contributes to a more open mindset and openings to improvement while revising. Another point made was that some students think of revision as a rewording activity. Many see it as useless and there is more work to do. Although the extent that students revise is seen as a function of their level of inspiration. If that student truly knows what makes a good writer, they understand the importance of this step. Experienced writers see revision very differently though. They see it to form their arguments and make sure the reader has an understanding of the topic. Overall, revision is seen and used in many ways and is a step in the writing process that shouldn’t be skipped.
