Genre’s Significance in Discourse Communities

Discourse communities in their own ways are very exclusive as they each have their own purposes, and common scenarios/routines members may follow. Such scenarios, are referred to as recurring situations and may be something that occurs monthly, weekly, or even daily. As it’s common and familiar to those within the discourse communities, they can expect a typified response to this recurring situation, also known as genre. Genres become routinely as members of the discourse communities can imagine a generic version of the expected response/genre will be like that time around. Genres can really be anything, as discourse communities can vary in interest across all types of topics. As genres are typified responses to recurring situations, these responses/genres can change as the situations can change as well. As the changes are made, new forms of genre may be established within the discourse communities.

Coming to this better understanding of genres are within discourse communities, I was able to identify examples of recurring situations within my discourse community that I hadn’t even realized was one. Identifying this recurring event, I realized it is a routinely thing that occurs every two weeks, and there is also a typified response, or genre that goes along with it. In my particular discourse community, this form of genre can come in various forms that could be an infographic, a video, or just plain text presenting the same information.
