Identity and Sense of Authority

At times it seems like one’s sense of identify and authority over a situation may be more than one may think, and they forget the context of which they exist. While having confidence in one’s abilities and writing is good, it seems typical that when in is introduced into a new space there may be some getting used to. One shouldn’t be ignorant to the previous existing structure and norms that existed before one, and if needed one should conform.

Demonstrated in Wardle’s “Identity, authority, and learning to write in new workplaces” Alan was a very strong-headed individual within his workplace. In his eyes, he was a the top holding the authority, and he didn’t apply himself to the norms of his job which had created conflict among him and his coworkers. While did seem very knowledgable, deeming himself as an authority his ego got in the way and he as not able to keep his job for long.

I believe it is important to comply to existing rules among workplaces especially when one is new to the space, as I would imagine that when one is new to comply however as seen by the example that may not alway be the case.
