Faces of The Tide

Throughout our lives, we become members of a multitude of discourse communities. Each with varying lexis, context, and mannerisms. The manner in which we speak finds itself adapting to where we are, who we are with, along with the passing of time. In order to reach maximum achievement in our place of being, we often alter the ways we conduct ourselves and the actions which we take. We often conform to fit into certain aesthetics and cultures, either hoping to limit the attention we draw to ourselves, or use it for personal gain. Discourse communities often involve various words, phrases, or actions which hold particular meaning to the members of said community. We tend to make alterations towards the “standard English language” in order to create what is commonly known as slang or workplace communication. In using this altered language, we create dialects which allow common associations with cultures and regions. Understanding the lexis and behaviors of different discourse communities allow us to interact with systems outside of ourselves. Skills that can be adaptable to different environments are very necessary in our ever changing society. As we migrate to different environments and build relationships, we constantly find ourselves in new discourses and often sub categories of said communities. Each with a specific target and goal in mind. Similar to an ocean, we face new tides, new behaviors, and new versions of ourselves which we create in order to progress forward in society.
