Understanding Rhetorical Situations in Discourse Communities

As talked about in the student authored writing, understanding rhetorical situations is a key part of how writers create their messages to communicate successfully in the different discourse communities. To fully understand rhetoric, you need to be aware of the specifics of each scenario, including the exigence, the rhetor, the audience, and the constraints. By understanding these certain things, writers can better change what they write to fit the wants and needs of the people they’re writing for in a certain situation.

As an example, a writer in a professional discourse group might need to think about the community’s established rules, preferred genres, and language. The audience and other experts will expect clear language, solid proof, and knowledge of what has already been written. If the writer wanted to talk about the same thing with the general public, they would have to take a different approach. They would have to simplify complicated ideas, use easier to understand words, and maybe use interesting stories or pictures to get their point across. In the end, knowing about rhetorical situations helps writers figure out what’s important in a communication situation and how to craft their messages so that they stick with a certain discourse group.
