Why Can we Not Write in Our Own Language?

When growing up we are taught to write a very certain way. Not to make any grammar or syntax errors, but that often brings with it a question, why is this correct and something else inherently wrong? We can often not write the way we speak to our friends or our families. We might use shorter versions of words or even acronyms like ASAP or BRB, however when we put these sorts of things in our writing we are penalized for it. There are many dialects, namely AAVE, Cajun English, Hispanic vernacular English, etc. And while it is great that many people have their own dialects which adds to their already rich culture it is unfortunate for them because they cannot incorporate the way they speak into their writing or else they will face consequences for it because it is not considered proper. People, because of racism and ignorance ingrained in American culture assume ignorance when they hear words and terms they do not understand, they assume it is below them and their “proper ways of speaking.” But in reality these dialects are not actually any worse they use slang and lexis that not everyone may be used to but that does not make the dialects or people that use them incorrect in any way. I hope that in the future we as a society are able to move past the fear and hostility towards what we do not quickly understand.
