Discourse communities in day to day life

Initially, genres can sound confusing to people. In elementary school, you are taught that genres are a form of literature, music, etc that is characterized by different similarities. But in writing composition, genre is a specific way that text is written to respond to a common or usual situation. We use different examples of genres everyday without knowing it. Some examples include report cards, receipts, emails, and blog posts. All of these are different ways in which genres are used on a day to day basis.

Lexicon is another word that can sound confusing to people. Lexicon in Discourse communities is essentially the vocab of that Discourse community. While it may sound simple there is another aspect to consider when recognizing vocabulary. This other aspect is that people outside the Discourse community would recognize the words but not understand the importance or implications of it. An example of this could be in a communication class. In a communication class the word noise can refer to several, different things such as the typical definition but also internal feelings and feelings in a room. In a communication class everyone would understand what is meant by using noise but outside of it they would not understand the full implication of the word.
