Identities in writing are used to establish further credibility or personal connection to a topic. According to Villaneuva’s “Writing Provides a Representation of Ideologies and Identities”, he claims that people carry many identities, and choose in certain situations when to express them. It’s all about time and place, and in which situation or setting that it will come of best use. He gives examples of using his different identities when writing, such as if he was writing to a school board about new ideas, he would express his identity of being a parent.Another example he gave was if he was writing about specific writing topics, he would express his identity of how he is a professor of writing and rhetoric. He also talks about how having multiple identities can depict one’s decisions when having certain conversations or in certain situations. Relating to the use of identities in writing, as I am writing about my discourse communities, I am using my identity and knowledge of being the former vice president of my student council, and also a former Chick-Fil-A employee. Having these identities helps qualify me even more to be writing about these topics because I have firsthand knowledge and experience of both.
