Genre is a very important thing to consider when relaying any type of information, as depending on the way that you relay information it can be taken differently. It is important to be aware to various different types of genre since not every scenario is the same, and there are definitely better ways to approach certain situations than others. Genres evolve to meet new rhetorical needs and vary depending on the context, such as audience or purpose. For example, a research paper for an English class may differ significantly from one for your science class. You have to better determine your genre because the approach and form you take may differ due to your professor’s standards. As you may not write a research paper for your English professor in the same way as you might for your Science class.

Understanding the purpose and context of a genre is crucial for using it effectively, rather than simply following a set of rules. Genres are part of everyday life, from jokes to emails, where people adapt their approach to trigger specific responses. Writers benefit from developing genre awareness (understanding the audience, purpose, and situation) for each unique scenario instead of following a fixed standard. To write effectively, Dirk advises identifying the goal, researching how others have written in similar situations, and tailoring the response to fit the context. By mastering genre awareness, writers can confidently tackle various writing challenges and adapt to new situations.
