In most schools you are thought to take writing very seriously and to make sure your tone in the writing is professional. When I graduated high school, I learned that that wasn’t necessarily the case. There are some things aren’t traditionally used in writing, but they are very beneficial. Things like pop culture and humor have their own benefits when used in writing. However, one must know the limitation of these things, so it doesn’t hurt things like their credibility and tone of the writing. If your writing is too humorous then it will come off as unserious and it won’t be taken seriously.
There are skills that you gain if you follow pop culture that can be used in your writings. Skills like researching, citing, and referencing things can help you in writing assignments. According to Erickson, things like Pop Culture will continue to be used in writing because times are changing and soon the normal traditional way of writing will change as time goes by. And I agree with them, new writers will get accustomed to a new form of writing sooner or later. Pop culture and Humor might be a pretty common thing in most casual readings and become the new writing tradition. But how does this show value? Simple, by doing something your readers can relate to. Depending on the audience, these things could be essential in your writing, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box.
