Demonstrating Values Through Genre: Pop Culture

Different forms of genre are all around us, and one of the umbrella ways to group it would be through pop culture. Pop culture is the mass media and modern ideas of cultures targeted towards younger people. It also gives people the opportunity and platform to express their many different opinions which can be very influential to others. In most cases, pop culture can have a very persuasive effect on people by making them even become blindsided and not have their own personal opinion, but just following the common or most popular thought. According to Keith Erickson, pop culture can be very useful in writing because it allows people to write about things they have a strong interest in, and are able to express themselves. Allowing people to express themselves through pop culture, whether reading or writing, can help them to become more literate in different forms. Pop culture can also bring individuality to people, opening them up to become very involved with things they have an interest in, which also can create debates between people. Debates can be popular because people want to back their own strong opinions and show how much they care about them. I’ve personally found myself in the middle of a pop culture debate, when expressing my love for reality TV shows, like Vanderpump Rules, Love Island, and even Dance Moms (the older seasons). Some people, my mother, think that those shows are awful and have nothing benefitting from watching them, because she thinks they are fake and over dramatic. While she can be right in some cases, they overall are very entertaining and I personally enjoy watching all the drama unfold. Pop culture is all around us, it is very influential and unavoidable because of the many forms that it can take. It can be very useful in our writing, helping us to tackle more ideas and points of views of expressions.
