Keith Erickson’s, “Pop Culture is Good for Writing”, talks about how pop culture, like movies and TV shows, can help improve your writing skills. We are told that when people watch a movie, they often look up reviews and think about what critics say. This helps them with practicing research skills, which is used in school and work. Erickson also says that pop culture encourages creativity. For example, writing about movies, shows, or games can improve writing because students enjoy it more. Pop culture helps students build their vocabulary and learn how to express their ideas better because they are interested in what they’re learning.
Catherine Garner’s, “Excellent Academic Writing Can Be Funny”, focuses on the idea that humor can be used in academic writing. Garner says that humor is often seen as unprofessional in school, but it can actually make writing more interesting and creative. Using comedy in writing helps students think outside the box and express their ideas in various ways. She argues that humor can make writing more enjoyable and help students improve their style. She also suggests that sharing jokes with friends or classmates helps make writing fun and gives students more confidence.
I agree with both of these texts. Pop culture can make learning and writing more fun and relatable, and using humor in writing can make it more engaging and creative. Both methods help students become better writers by encouraging them to think differently and express themselves clearly.
