John Swales focused on six criterias involved in the discourse community: common goals, internal communication, specialist lexis, multiple genres, information and feedback, and levels of membership.
Discourse communities are very important in the academic world because they shape how people connect, learn, and add to their fields.Students learn how to interact with these groups by changing the way they write to meet the needs of different fields, like business, education, or the sciences. Being able to change is important, since each field has its own rules for how to explain and argue ideas. The writing also stresses that discourse groups are not fixed. They change as new people participate, technology changes, and social norms evolve. Students are taught to learn the current norms of these groups, and also to make a real difference in them. This includes reading, writing, and working with other people to learn, where people share their ideas and get feedback to improve their own understanding.
In general, students learn more about the expectations and connections that affect their roles as writers by looking at how these groups work and how they change how people talk to each other. Studying discourse communities helps students become more diverse writers, giving them skills that they can use in multiple writing styles.
