There are various things that can be considered a Discourse community. However, there are a set of rules that need to be followed in order to be a discourse community. A big rule is that a Discourse community must have a main goal. This goal is what the discourse community is trying to achieve. A good example of a Discourse community is an NFL team. An NFL team are a group that share a common goal and that is to win the Super Bowl. A Discourse community also have genres, which are documents that are specifically related to the Discourse community. And with my NFL team example, a genre can be considered to be a play book. Everyone on the team can ready playbooks perfectly fine but someone outside of the team will not be able to understand it. Another requirement of Discourse communities is lexis, which are basic terms or words that have more of a significant meaning that someone outside of the Discourse community won’t really understand. For example, an NFL team would use terms and words like, pick, play, sack, fade, cut, slant, and many more that have a different meaning inside the Discourse community compared to outside of it. To finish up, there are some of requirements that need to be considered in order to call a group a discourse community.
